Notice for Indians acquiring foreign nationality

Section 8 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 provides for declaration of Intention of renouncing Indian citizenship. Any citizen of India in Chile, who acquires foreign citizenship should immediately renounce his Indian citizenship by making a declaration of his intention to the Embassy of India, Santiago in the prescribed form (please download here) and immediately surrender his Indian Passport to the Embassy. It may be noted that Indian Law does not permit dual citizenship. In case a ‘Surrender Certificate’ is required then Form for Miscellaneous Service is to be filled up and a service fee of CHP14000/- is levied.

It is also informed that a penalty ranging from Rs10,000/- to Rs50,000/- will be imposed for not surrendering India passport/travelling on Indian passport after acquisition of foreign citizenship. The exact penalty will be determined at the time of surrender of passport.
